Chris Omigie and Erick McGriff Commit to the Jayhawks

The good times continue for Jayhawk football fans.  The Jayhawkslant is reporting that both Arlington Texas receiver Chris Omigie  as well as Tampa Florida receiver Erick McGriff have committed to the Kansas Jayhawk coaching staff.

Not too much info out at this time but as Toben Opurum mentioned in our interview with him last week, Omigie was very impressed following his visit and Toben thought there was a good chance of him being a Jayhawk. As far as McGriff it had been long rumored he was a very, very heavy Kansas lean and it appears he has pulled the trigger.  The Slant should have more on the story in the near future.

Omigie and McGriff represent the first true wide receiver commits for the class, and at 6'5" and 6'4" respectively will be two very big targets for Jayhawk quarterbacks in the future.  These two bring the Kansas total to 21 known commitments for the 2009 class and with probably only a few scholarships remaining the next few weeks should get interesting.

Makes you wonder if these two watched the offensive explosion in the Insight Bowl last week.  Nonetheless, the momentum continues and the future looks bright for Kansas football.

absolutely...

watch out for this group in the future…

Also worth mentioning McGriff is the son of former MLB star Fred “the crime dog” McGriff. Pretty cool connection there.

I've been waiting to see what would happen

with these two for some time. I felt that they were in the bag but its good to know they’re on board. Its interesting to note that Scouts hasn’t updated their status.

I was mildly surprised to see us get both...

I wasn’t sure what the coaches plans were for two “big” receivers and also didn’t know if both of these guys were interested in playing with another similar type player. Glad to see things worked out though.

Very good news...

thanks for reporting. Love the potential of both guys and feels really good to beat out Beck for Omigie.

Beaty is paying big dividends already...

and I think as good as Beck was for us, Beaty will prove to be an upgrade.

And its great

to see what other schools offered these kids scholarships…

Auburn, Ole Miss, Nebraska

And they had considerations from Florida, Georgia, and Boston College.

If we can continue to increase our visibility (i.e. New Years Day bowls…) and have a smooth transition from Reesing to Pick or Webb its hard to imagine very big things in our near future.

with the weapons...

we are starting to surround the next quarterback with, it will certainly help with the transition.

Can I get a hell yeah for a UNC loss tonight?

Lost to BC…at home even! I got to admit that I didn’t think that UNC would lose to a team that wasn’t one of the better ones in the country (Wake Forest, Duke, possible Clemson) but now that I think about it, its tougher to take down a team like that when they’re focused and expect a challenge. No offense intended to BC, since I love Tyrese Rice and Al Skinner, but I’m sure that UNC thought they’d be able to run away from them since they were at home.

Little early in the year for the Roy choke.

He likes to wait for the regional finals. In all seriousness, I think Roy benefited in 05 because those players weren’t his. They used Roy, Roy used them, there was a cutthroat honesty about their relationships. When it’s all Roy’s boys the overemotionalism seems to overwhelm the performance when the pressure ramps up. It will be fascinating to see if Roy can get a title with purely his recruits.

Things took a big upswing....

right after the Missouri win, since then recruiting momentum has been building and Mangino likely will have a top 30-35 class when it’s all said and done.

Awesome

simply awesome. Both see the field next year???

by I need more Esteban on Jan 4, 2009 11:46 PM CST reply actions

I doubt it

Since we’re so stacked with receivers, and I’d expect all the playing time thats been vacated by dexton fields is going to be taken up by jonathan wilson. Might be some time for these guys, but i don’t think they’ll have a dez briscoe impact as freshman just because of how much depth we’ve built at that position.

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 4, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Agree...

I think we are pretty loaded at receiver next year Brisoce, Meier, Wilson, Rod Harris(RS this year), Daymond Patterson(sounds like he wants to move back to WR), AJ Steward…anyone else? It’s definitely possible that one of these guys sees some PT but I am kind of hoping we can keep a redshirt and save them for the future.

Although If I’m not mistaken McGriff has said it’s his goal to play as a true freshman.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 5, 2009 7:09 AM CST up reply actions

He could...

We were stacked last year with Henry, Hereford, and Fields but true freshman Dez Briscoe found his way onto the field.

by labbadabba on Jan 5, 2009 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

Absolutely...

one of these two could definitely find there way on the field. They both have size, decent speed and as we’ve been able to recruit more talented players we have seen more true freshman play while we are still building top to bottom depth.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 5, 2009 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

Rod Harris...

Did he get hurt and we got him a medical RS? I only ask because he played in the first three games, so I assumed we burned his RS aside from anything medical.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 5, 2009 9:27 AM CST up reply actions

I don't recall seeing him in the first three...

yes maybe a play or two in one of the first games, but I think by South Florida he pretty much disappeared. Not sure what the story on how the redshirt was obtained but to my knowledge multiple players and sources have indicated he took a shirt and actually had an excellent year in terms of development. Also for what it’s worth he was standing on the sideline at the insight bowl undressed with all the other redshirts.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 5, 2009 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

Interesting...

Like you, I don’t remember seeing him play all that much (mostly Special Teams), but I know that he did participate in all of them (even had a tackle @ USF). If he got a RS that’s great – and your Insight Bowl observation would indicate to me that he did – I just don’t see how it was obtained after playing in those games.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 5, 2009 11:37 AM CST reply actions

Medical Redshirt maybe??

I don’t recall seeing him on any injury reports though…

by labbadabba on Jan 5, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

I also meant to ask...

do you know if we were able to do the same with Steven Johnson? He also played early and then we never saw him again…

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 5, 2009 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

I spoke to Steven Johnson recently...

and his RS is still intact…next year he will be a RS Freshman

by Owen Kemp on Jan 5, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

There are examples of this in the past...

most notably Mike Rivera. He played in the 4 non-con games his true freshman year primarily on special teams. Sat the remainder, got a medical redshirt. Fairly common in college football.

2 more 4 Star recruits

Anyone know what’s happening with JUCO transfer LB Bryson Littlejohn? He has KU on his list. He could really provide some competition in our LB corps.

Also, Ed Warriner has been working on 2-way frosh Bradley McDougald S/RB, I see that we’re still in the running according to Rivals but Scouts doesn’t have KU listed as one of his possibles…

by labbadabba on Jan 5, 2009 11:54 AM CST reply actions

w/Littlejohn is sounds like we are a longshot…likely staying out west, but I’m not counting Bowen out on anything.

as far as McDougald (does go to Josh Richardsons HS) I know the rivals guys have tried to get something out of him and I myself have tried to see where he is at but pretty close to the vest type kid. Sounds like a couple more visits before he decides. Also interesting to note he is being recruited by KU as a WR so not sure how yesterday impacted him.

Keep an eye on Dequin Evans another 4-Star JUCO DE, sounds like this may be between Kansas and Oregon, and he would be a huge pickup.

Also, I got in touch w/Tracy Moore for the first time last night, he’s not dropping any hints but he will announce next Sunday and says the final three are Kansas, Colorado, Okie State. Rivals guys are speculating he’s a strong OSU lean but he did say he’d give me an interview next Monday if he chooses to commit to KU Sunday night.

I thought Evans already committed?

Didn’t we just recently land the 4-star DE Evans from JuCO? 6-6 245ish? Maybe I’m just crazy.

We landed Quinten Woods...

Dequin Evans is still out there…Your right that we landed a 4 Star JUCO End, just the wrong one.

One other item of note...

Slant reporting Sean Ransburg has been cleared to play for KU next year and will join the team at semester.

I don’t think there was a lot of doubt surrounding this one, he was 1 class short by mistake, but still you never know once a kid leaves campus if he’ll ever make it back.

Glad to know Ransburg is back, the next question is where will they look for him to contribute.

Exactly -

I was wondering where he was going to end up. I’m not sure with the glut of QB’s we will have in the Fall where he will fit in. We’ll have Reesing, Meier, Lawrence, Pick, Webb, and Christianson. Unless we’re going to run 4-deep at QB in 2010 something’s gotta give.

by labbadabba on Jan 5, 2009 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

He won't be at QB...

that much I can tell you…

I'll be surprised if it's not RB...

and I can see him fitting in well on special teams. Sure, we have a couple guys coming in at RB, but especially with Angus moving, I’d expect him to stay there until they think they need him elsewhere.

by hiphopopotamus on Jan 5, 2009 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

It would seem to be the most logical spot for him...
