Open Game Thread :: Game #13 :: Tennessee 9-2 (0-0) @ Kansas 10-2 (0-0)

Tennessee Volunteers at Kansas Jayhawks, Jan 3, 2009 1:00 PM CST

Honestly, I'm not so sure we win this game. The Vols are extremely dangerous, and if we don't take extra steps to make sure they don't grab every rebound in sight, it could be a long day on the boards.

I will say, though, that we do, somehow, win today. I'll say it's because Cole Aldrich schools Brian Williams and one of the Morris twins (I'll take Marcus, simply because of personal preference) shows up in a big way. I'm talking 17 and 10 big. And, hell, maybe, if Mario Little plays as has been speculated, that will give us the spark we need.

Kansas 78 Tennessee 69

Good afternoon gentlemen.

Great start. Tennessee does look awful behind the arc.

It's been too early so far.

Tennessee’s defense has not impressed me at all.

Plenty of jogging by the Vols.

These are some of the worst in-bounds passes I’ve seen in my entire life. Just throwing it way high in the air, hoping a KU player comes down with it.

Something we definitely need to improve on.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 3, 2009 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know.

He is pretty proficient at it. And if he does it just about every time, you’d have to figure he knows what he’s doing, right?

I mean, I’m just saying I wasn’t yelling NO when he pushed it down. Especially against the Vols. If they want to crash the offensive boards, we should make it a point to sprint down for fast break points every chance we get.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

I know...

It definitely isn’t the same feeling you got when guys like Nick Bradford or Bryant Nash use to take off down the floor…Collins doesn’t make you nervous because he seems to keep it together even when it looks like it might be spiraling out of control.

Huge play by Brady.

And another huge play by Sherron.

Wow. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Sherron play as well as he has today.

And Brady, yet again, is performing quite well. Nothing special, but he definitely has a role on this team…

Absolutely...

he and Urlacher both do and because of it they are no longer losers…

by Owen Kemp on Jan 3, 2009 1:45 PM CST reply actions

Self is doing this all for a reason.

I mean, last year, did he get any technicals at all? I don’t think so.

I don’t know whether it is to motivate the team, or to stick up for the young guys to build trust, or what, but it is all for a purpose.

It doesn’t really bother me at all, either. I like it.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:46 PM CST reply actions

We need some big-time minutes

from Quintrell and Releford.

We need ’em real bad.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:47 PM CST reply actions

they'll get time as they improve...

Thomas is probably the most raw of any of our Big men but has a lot of potential…and I think Releford is just playing against stiffer competition than he has at any point in his career…once he settles in he’ll be a solid contributor I think.

I mean, just a quick look at their KenPom page shows that they are absolutely brutal from the outside. But they continue to shoot them, for some inexplicable reason.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

yeah not sure that was ever a good idea...

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 3, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

Outstanding first half.

Collins could sit out the next half and maybe have his best game of the year.

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 1:55 PM CST reply actions

+1.

Maybe his career.

I mean, he is playing absolutely ridiculous. One of the best halves of basketball I’ve seen all year by anybody.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

Stupid foul.

It’s pretty clear that Little is still getting back into the swing of things, and the game is moving faster than he is right now.

To be honest, he isn’t impressing me at all. I’d almost rather him sit out in the second half, but he needs to work back to speed, so he needs some PT.

But stupid passes, stupid foul right there, and too many long-range jumpers outside of the flow of our offense.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:56 PM CST reply actions

If we've got the lead...and the opportunity...

I wouldn’t mind seeing guys like Little, Thomas and Releford get some minutes against a good non-con team like this…

But, your absolutely right, if it means winning or losing we need guys that are battle tested out there right now…

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen Kemp on Jan 3, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

ok up 9 at half...

avoid a letdown in the 2nd and button things up a bit to avoid these turnovers and we should be in good shape…

Now let’s hear what Doug “shorts on backwards” Gottlieb has to say

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Besides Sherron, Cole and Brady played awesome as well.

Brady just keeps on chugging, and he is the best defender on our team. Tyrel actually played decent, especially on defense, and the Morris twins played average when they stayed out of foul trouble.

But, there is certainly room for improvement, which is comforting given the fact we’re beating the #18 ranked team (although they probably don’t deserve that lofty of a ranking) by 9 at half.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 1:59 PM CST reply actions

+ a lot.

It’s really difficult to do much of anything in an OGT for basketball. Usually, I only will add some thoughts at the 4 minute TOs. I like watching the game without a computer in front of my face, and then just commenting on what I had seen over the last 4 minutes.

Missouri is up 6 with 14 seconds left.

I’m torn between my usual hoping for them to embarrassingly lose and the thought that if the Big 12 north is too crappy it will hurt KU’s rpi no matter how many games we win.

The next 5 minutes are key.

We could easily lose this lead, and if we do, I bet we lose.

And no, I don’t think the comparison to 05-06 is fair.

This team is more like the 04-05 team, just without the triumvirate of seniors (Langford, Miles, Simien) while we only have Sherron and Cole.

because I can say with a fair amount of certainty that there will be pressure and trapping coming our way from Bruce Pearl late in this one.

but I would still give it a go if I were Pearl…even more aggressive half court pressure might give us problems.

He has probably played the best game of his year today. Hopefully TyTay doesn’t pick up any more fouls, and we will have some depth.

Cause I don’t think Bill is going to play Mario Little except for a blowout.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:31 PM CST reply actions

Yep.

And he should get a chance against Siena on Tuesday.

But yeah, he certainly isn’t ready right now to play against good teams.

Smart plays by Reed and Morningstar

both of them had a 3 pointer and they passed on it for a better shot. Little things like that will help over a season.

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 2:40 PM CST reply actions

Take Little out.

I think he is going to be a big-time player, but he just isn’t ready right now. Give him plenty of minutes against Siena, steal some against Mich St. and see if he can play the rest of the year.

Then they do it again, steal it, and

give it right back. This isn’t a very good Tennessee team.

I haven't paid much attention to the SEC yet.

Normally start following basketball closely when conference play starts.

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

I'm kind of the same way...

conference play and now the end of football season is when I really start to invest more time into things…I pay attention to KU before that but don’t have time for anything else.

Bilas trying to lock up understatement of the year

“Another effort like this by Tennessee won’t beat the best in the SEC”

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 2:42 PM CST reply actions

I don't know.

The SEC is so weak, this could probably win them plenty of games in the SEC.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

That's 4 on Tyshawn.

Great play on the break of the full court press, but that was just a really stupid foul.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:43 PM CST reply actions

Another really stupid foul.

Come on. These stupid fouls need to stop.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:46 PM CST reply actions

Why wouldn't Reed shoot those?

Is Collins a better free throw shooter than Reed?

Not really sure at all.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

I know they just said Reed shoots

92% from the line. I have a hard time believing Collins is higher than that.

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

I was saying not really sure why Bill picked Sherron to shoot ’em.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

we’re going to be able to get the ball inbounds the rest of the game…this is frustrating.

Marcus needs to pick his brother up.

by rockchalk on Jan 3, 2009 2:50 PM CST reply actions

Either this is a coming out for KU's defense or

Tennessee is brutal on offense. I don’t see how they can score.

It’s probably a little of both.

by Warden11 on Jan 3, 2009 2:52 PM CST reply actions

Both.

Tennessee is a terrible three-point shooting team, and we are p acking it in and making them shoot the outside shots. Not a bad strategy at all.

And yeah, we are a good defensive team. But I think it is partly because the Vols simply can’t hit an outside shot.

Awesome win.

For one, it proves we can beat good teams, which should be a huge boost for confidence.

And for two, it is a win that could bump us up a line or two when it comes to NCAA seeding, especially if the Vols end up winning the SEC.

The best kind. Still had some youthful mistakes, but I think they were more a product of playing a really good team this time instead of anything else. Cole and Sherron were monsters.

Season changing win...

in my mind. We could not have looked worse inbounding the ball, but we really played well and with a lot of poise once we got it in. This team is really starting to show some ability and I really liked what I saw out of Little. If he can stay healthy going forward, he’ll really give us a lift and be a great addition to the rotation.

You guys have any thoughts on how we’ll fare in East Lansing?
