What's a Succesful Year?
With Kansas losing to Michican State (sigh), that shows a lot. It shows that this team may not be able to handle these top 10 teams. Don't get me wrong, I know they could beat them, but these teams are just flat out better. What I'm trying to say is, this team is not likely to win the national championship this year. If they won't do that, what is considered a successful season for the 08-09 Kansas Jayhwaks Basketball team? I would have to say a trip to the sweet sixteen would be a very dood year after losing the starting five from last year. What about you?

This should make for a good discussion...
My thought is this…
We are now 11-4 in the non conference…
I am hoping for 10-12 wins in conference play, and then at least 1 win in the Big 12 tourney…
That puts us somewhere in the range of 22-11 to 24-9 headed to the tourney.
Seeded somewhere in the 6-8 range depending on the final result…
If we are a 6…I would love to squeak out a sweet 16 appearance…
7-8 anything beyond 1st round would be gravy…
It’s hard to measure success in a year like this, but as you said a trip to the sweet 16 would certainly define it for a lot of folks. If we can be in the 22+ win column, do that in the tourney and see significant improvement in this team I will be happy. This year like his first will be Bill Self’s test in terms of his coaching, not years like last. This is where he teaches, this is where he develops and this is where he sets the stage for a run in the future.
anyone else??

Sweet sixteen would be a great year.
I’d be quite happy with winning the north and making the tournament. Winning one game in the NCAA’s would be a fine finish considering the huge losses from last year.

To me
I would consider any post-season experience for this team to be a successful year. We’re obviously young, and not going to win it all this year. So just getting there this year, getting a feel for it, and then coming back next year would be awesome. Also, a strong showing in conference is needed if we’re going to have a shot next year.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
I agree somewhat with both Hunter and Giants...
that post-season experience would be a solid year, but now that I’m fairly confident it will be the NCAA Tourney and not the NIT crap…I want a first round win at least…I wouldn’t be terribly happy with a one and done…I hate losing in the first round, ruins my whole weekend.

Tournament or Bust
Really, the only thing I want this team to do is keep the consecutive NCAA Tournament berths streak alive.
To do so, we likely need ten more wins or so:
2- Nebraska
2- Colorado
2- Missouri
2- Iowa State
1- KState
1- Oklahoma State
1- Texas Tech
That would do it wins-wise. But would the SOS/RPI be high enough at that point? Not sure.

I don't believe a 10 win team in the Big 12...
has ever been left out if I’m not mistaken so those wins you listed would get us in…11 no problem

True, but...
If they’re serious about taking 10 Big East teams this year, it’s entirely possible that something unprecedented will happen on the other end, as well.
KU currently has the 95th toughest schedule, and is 51st in the RPI, according to CBSSportsline.com. Those are definite bubble numbers. Without a win or two against the upper-echelon Big 12 teams, getting into the tournament is far from a done deal, IMO.

good points...
now you’ve got me nervous again…
win 10 and maybe something weird does happen, but win 11 and it’s still gotta be a lock.

You mention a win or two against the "upper-echelon Big 12"
Two questions…
1.)Who would you put in this category…
2.)Where do you see us most likely able to steal a win from one of these teams….
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Here's what i think for the "Upper-Echelon" teams this yearl;
Texas (duh), Oklahoma (Griffin), and Baylor (Loaded with Seniors/Young Talent).. those three and Missouri/A&M are like us, fighting for placement between those three.
Personally I don’t think anyone is going to beat Baylor, except maybe Texas because they are so experianced. But I think they have enough BIGs to throw at Griffin and the point guard play to out play them, where ever they play at. And i’m sorry to say this but we don’t stand much of a chance. I think they are an elite 8 team. IMO

good season?
A good season would be developing players that will help us down the road. Get rid of Reed because he will not be much once Johnson arrives next year at guard. Also, am glad Releford is getting minutes, but we have Appleton, the juco player and it seems like a waste with him unless I don’t know something. I say let’s see what Thomas has too. Let’s find our core players. We need to win at least one game in the big dance so the kids know what the experience is like.
As far as big wins we need to beat either Texas or Oklahoma. Oh and sweet Mizzou lol
BaldJedi...welcome to RCT...
as far as a good season, I think your right…development is what we need this year first and foremost. I wouldn’t give up on Reed, remember he had some decent offers out there so he may still develop into a valuable role player.
As far Appleton, I think that ship has sailed…it’s becoming apparent he is probably here to balance the classes, provide some veteran help in practices but that’s about it. When you come in with Kleinman because coach is mad your probably not destined to be a major contributor.
Thomas is very raw and he’ll come along, but it won’t be too often in game situations this year I don’t think.
Again welcome, keep the thoughts coming and I second your motion that we should beat Mizzou as often and as badly as possible

yea we've got a lot more people around here
recently and it’s been great. Tell your friends!

I couldn't tell you exactly, but...
we’ve definitely had an influx of activity and it’s been a lot of fun…I say keep em coming and I think the motto here at RCT as Esteban eludes to is sort of like that of a house party…
Tell a friend, tell a friends friend…and if that guy has a friend and he’s a Jayhawk fan, well invite him too…

I still say
we should find a way to lure Jaminrawk and co from the LJ World/KU Sports site. They do gameday blogs on the article comments section. Its like the dark ages over there..
I agree about developing players
I think making the tournament is successful and anywhere after that would be great.
I’ll disagree about Reed, although I don’t think he is a starter. I think he is a pure shooter that has only gotten better as a sophomore. Not all players are stars their first couple years, some take longer to develop but I see a pure shooter with a lot of good tools. Johnson is going to be a star, but I wouldn’t say throwing Reed out of the fold is as good as done.

Agree with Esteban about Reed.
I think he has some similarities to Jeff Boschee. He was brought in to be a point or combination guard and I don’t think that’s his spot. He’s really seems more of a pure 2 guard and struggles when he has to ball-handle too much. Boschee struggled early in his time at KU because he was hyped as the second coming of Bobby Hurley. When Roy moved him off the ball he became a very effective player. Tyrel definitely has a great shooting touch and will be effective if properly used. (I think Self can figure it out, obviously)

reed like boschee?
I would have to disagree about the boschee comparison. Reed is not very quick and Boschee was. I hope Reed doesn’t shave his head like Boschee did because Reed has big ol ears lol. Anyways, I figure let’s redshirt Little because this team is not going to do a lot this year honestly. It maybe best to suck it up this year, and let the guys improve knowing we would have Little, Robinson, Johnson and Withey coming in next year to play. We would know that Little and Withey are practicing with the team and getting ready. Just a thought since this year won’t be great, but can make the future very bright.
You may be right
but you may also be remembering Boschee as a senior which is something that people do a lot without thinking about it. Reed is a sophomore and Reed was noticeably slow last year on the court. This year I feel like he has gotten faster and quicker. If the kid works hard over two more offseasons, he could be a really great player as a senior.
Boschee was not a star but he was a guy that a final four team needed to be a senior leader and a 3-point specialist, I can see Reed being that at some point and maybe even a little more. Let’s say somewhere in-between Boschee and Hinrich. (More towards Boschee, obviously)

hmm
As i recall Boschee had a more consistent shot over his career, but still think Reed won’t do a lot for us. He can’t jump and at least twice a game he has to look for his jock while on defense because he is still not quick enough. If he was playing only 10 minutes a game or less I would be fine, since I do not trust him in crunch time.
Didn't Boschee start as a freshman...
or am I crazy
Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
Yeah
4 year starter, I seem to recall his freshman year being one of those dud classes that Roy was famous for. I found this on a draft preview from ’02
A four-year starter at Kansas, Boschee leaves as the school’s ninth all-time leading scorer with 1,560 points. He’s also the Jayhawks’ and Big 12’s leader in career 3-point field goals with 338. His 425 career assists rank ninth in KU history and his 161 career steals ties for eighth. As a senior, Boschee was third team all-Big 12 and honorable mention by the coaches. His 110 3-pointers last season was just one shy of Kansas’ single-season record set by Terry Brown in 1991.
Wow, how quickly I forget how valuable and good Boschee was. Granted, he got to start as a freshman because of a not-so-talented team, but those numbers are pretty damn impressive.
My final thought to this debate is that I may have overextended on the comparisons of Reed to Boschee. He definitely will not have the career that Boschee did in a Kansas uniform. I will say that by the time Reed is a senior, I think he can be a similar player. Development is often a four year thing.

shall see
guess we shall see what happens with Reed. So far I am not impressed with him, but who knows what will happen. I recall Darnell Jackson came out of nowhere to start for us his senior year. With new guys coming next year his minutes will drop however. I wish we would decide on who is in our rotation because I don’t like the idea of having 11 guys when we should have 8 or 9 at the most.
Self typically starts...
to limit his rotation as he heads in to conference play. He’s said before 8-9 is his ideal, problem is we don’t have 8 that play consistently night in and night out so he’s left scrambling to find 8 amongst 11 that showed up to play.

rotation
Well Mario is not redshirted which is good for us. Helps this year and the near future which also helps is in future recruiting because we can get recruits sooner rather than later. Anyways here would be my rotation, as if Self is watching this haha.
Starting five: Mario, Marcus, Cole, Tyshawn, Sherron
Bench: Travis, Markieff, Brady, Tyrel
A decent team that should win 10-11 games in conference. If we can win at least 1 game in both the Big 12 and March tournaments I will be content. Then they will know what it is like to be in tourneys and win a game in each.
I like it Solid rotation...
likely going to see Brady and Little switched simply due to the Mario Little injuries and the fact that Brady has been consistently matched up against the opponents perceived top threat. What that says to me is that despite any shortcomings in talent, Brady has in some way earned the trust of Coach Self much like Christian Moody did.
To be honest I could see this rotation as a very likely scenario by the end of the season as I see Quintrell Thomas as very much a work in progress still and clearly Conner Teahan’s presence has lessened as time goes on.

solid
It is a rotation that can be successful and we need consistency and players knowing their roles soon. This team is very raw and I have realized this year is a growth year and patience is important with this team. Next year is where I will get excited knowing we should be healthy and much stronger overall. It is nice to hear defending champs every time we are introduced. Even when i was in Arizona for the KU/UofA game we were introduced that way.
As I said...
I think it’s a Solid rotation…certainly could be successful and by the year ideally a consistent one.

KU/AZ game
Was that pretty cool? Any stories from being down there?

AZ/KU
AZ has a great facility and every time I have gone to a game I have enjoyed their fans. Knowledgeable and fun to talk to during the games. My hats off to them. I was at the game 2 hours prior just to watch them warmup and they have an extensive warmup plan that is impressive. It makes sense why they are in shape and so organized throughout. I do think our Crimson Girls rival their cheerleaders by the way ;)
