Open Game Thread :: Game #2 :: Louisiana Tech 1-0 (0-0) @ #14 Kansas 1-0 (0-0)
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs @ Kansas Jayhawks
I have been waiting for this day for months. Sure, it was nice to get the football season back in gear last week, and to actually play a game. But it wasn't the same, having been forced to listen to the game online. It is an entirely different animal this week, when I actually get to watch the game on the television.
I can't wait to get introduced to Daymond Patterson in full, living-and-breathing color.
I can't wait to see the AstroTurf of Memorial Stadium, nor can I wait to see the stands jam-packed with blue.
I can't wait to yell at the TV after a disheartening turnover or sack or long play by the opposing offense. I love being mad at football, in a weird and messed-up kinda way.
I can't wait to be able to analyze a college football game after watching it, so I feel at least somewhat informed in my opinions.
But most of all, I can't wait to watch the Kansas Jayhawks play football. Should be fun.
With all of that said, here is your open thread for tonight's game. Put any-and-all comments, before, during or after the game, here.
Louisiana Tech figures to provide a solid test, a game where it should be pretty close at halftime. I don't think we will have too much trouble ending up with the higher number of points, but don't be surprised for it to be a nail-biter, at least at the beginning of the game. I'll predict that DP scores another TD, that Jocques has a much better game than last week and that we effectively render Taylor Bennett horrendous. I'll also preidct that we give up two TDs, one to Patrick Jackson and the other to Phillip Livas.
Overall, a productive game, but not a terribly dominant game as we became accustomed to last non-conference season.

Wow, I'm pumped.
Thus far in the world of college football,Notre Dame is struggling to edge out San Diego State. The same SDSU Aztec team that lost to 1-AA Cal Poly last week.
Washington got screwed out of a potential game-tying PAT by a bogus celebration penalty. The ensuing 32-yard try was blocked with :02 left in the 4th to allow BYU to hold on, 28-27.
East Carolina, off of their “upset” (like I said last week, East Carolina is a damn good football team; and, BTW, I did predict them to beat West Virginia… ;) of Va Tech, they are beating West Virginia 24-3. Wow.
And, finally, the ACC is horrible. Like, terrible. Really bad. There second best team, and arguably best (Wake Forest) is losing to Ole Miss, SEC’s worst team (likely) at home. Wow.
Now, we have gametime.

Where is everybody?
That crowd looks pathetic. I know it’s cool/rainy, but COME ON!

The shot they just showed
makes it look a lot better.
I think we have another sellout.

Nevermind
Huh. Now it’s much fuller. They must have taped that intro earlier.

Crap.
No one likes FGs in the Red Zone, particularly me.
At least Branstetter is in there now, now that we have his whole NCAA issue straightened out.

Ehhhhhhh
If the O line is getting over powered by LaTech, we could have problems this year.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 6:31 PM CDT 0 recs
Wow.
What a weird play. Daymond needs to hold on to the ball, but at least we got the ball back.
by rockchalk on Sep 6, 2008 6:32 PM CDT 0 recs
I'm behind.
And I just saw us not get it.
That was embarrassing.
Again, I think our O-Line needs major work. Including benching Mayes.

Two Injuries
Uh oh. Harper was just taken off on a stretcher in a neck brace. Blakesley looks to have hurt his foot. Not good at all.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 6:41 PM CDT 0 recs
Yeah, that sucks.
Harper’s injury was weird. I didn’t even notice him being hurt until they showed him being carted off the field in a stretcher.
Blakesley doesn’t look as serious, though. Plus, we still have three really good DTs in Johnson Jr., Greene and Parish. Harper will be harder to replace, however, IMO.

Blakesly
Now saying they’re looking at his knee. Not good.

Yeah, I obviously was wrong.
If he is out for a substantial amount of time, that is a major blow.

Geez!
So many third down conversions for LT.

Phew
Caught a break there. Still, it’s going to take some big time adjustments to stop this LaTech offense.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 6:56 PM CDT 0 recs
Kinda got lucky there.
Good pressure by Rivera, good hit by Stuckey, good awareness by Harris. Still, a pretty terrible defensive drive overall.
We need to figure out a way to get some negative plays. We aren’t giving up big plays, like, at all, but we also are giving up yards EVERY SINGLE PLAY, and it is killing us.
Our lack of defensive push really sucks, at least right now without Blakesley.

TOUCHDOWN!!!
{Insert New Nickname Here} with the score!!!
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 7:04 PM CDT 0 recs
I absolutely love Daymond Patterson.
LIke, for serious.
All-in-all, an absolutely terrific drive. Our offense, in its 3 drives has been pretty awesome (save the lack of offensive push on 3rd-and-one and 4th-and-one), but our D has looked average at best.
Pretty shocking considering that LA Tech is considered to have a better D than O and that we are thought to have the same thing (better D than O). Weird.

Nickname Idea
What about Daylight? As in, he’s always in the open field?

I love it.
I am planning on having a vote-type thing about his nickname sometime this week; that will definitely be one of the options.

Kind of got a break there.
We are having big-time problems in the punt return game.
What else is new…

Clearly Touched by LaTech
You can tell by how the ball starts spinning
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:03 PM CDT 0 recs
And now, the play is under review.
Oh, nevermind. Dooley is challenging. Not a bad challenge, considering that this is the kind of major momentum-swing that LaTech needs to get back in the game. Still, I don’t think there is much of a chance that it actually gets overturned.

Bring in Quigley
Sharp completely missed the hole right there. We need to try Quigley to get that running game going.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:05 PM CDT 0 recs
Agreed.
At least try him out for awhile. We can’t get anything going from either Crawford or Sharp.

Defense
Love the gang tackling. They’ve got the right attitude to be successful this year. Also are getting more pressure on the QB, but it’s mostly coming from blitzing.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:12 PM CDT 0 recs
Yeah.
We are gett of it is either JoeMo or Rivera.
AT some point in time, like when we have to use as many secondary players as possible against TTU and Mizzou, we are going to have to be able to get to the QB with just the four down linemen. But, maybe then Mangino will be more willing to put in a more pass-rusher type, like Laptad or Onyegbule, for all three downs.
Definitely something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

Hey, look who it is...
Angus Quigley.
As long as he doesn’t fumble, which has been his achilles heel thus far in his career at Kansas, I am all for him seeing some carries.

Running Problems
It seems like the blocking problems are actually coming from the interior of the line. Weird.
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:31 PM CDT 0 recs
I'm more worried about Hartley and Mayes
than the two redshirt freshmen tackles.
I’ve been calling for Mayes to be benched, but Hartley just got blown by that last play, maybe he is the one that could use some time on the bench.
Of course, they may be the best available. In any case, I think that our offensive line will be much better next season, when Lueken, Marrongelli and Williams all have a reasonable chance of earning a starting spot. That would be a damn fine line, combining two of those along with Thorson and the two current redshirt tackles. Sick, dog.

Amazing
That was the best return for 0 yards I’ve ever seen. How did he do that?
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:36 PM CDT 0 recs
Uh-huh.
Quigley just might be the best RB on this team.
He is almost certainly the most athletic RB.
On a similar note, I don’t think anyone has been as disappointing thus far this season on our team than Jocques.
by rockchalk on Sep 6, 2008 8:41 PM CDT 0 recs
Wow.
I am loving this kid more-and-more-and-more.
I think Daylight is going to have to be his nickname. It is just too awesome of one.
And, it also has the same prefix (Day) as his name.
by rockchalk on Sep 6, 2008 8:43 PM CDT 0 recs
The missed extra point sucks, though.
One of these days, like as soon as next Friday, we won’t be able to afford missed XP’s like that. Come on. Find a FG kicker who can simply knock ’em in from the 3. Seriously.
by rockchalk on Sep 6, 2008 8:44 PM CDT 0 recs
Overall
Taking a look at the big picture for a second: This team isn’t playing it’s best football yet. But that’s a GOOD thing, IMO. You aren’t going to get the same effort 12 weeks in a row. Let’s save the peak performances for games against teams like Texas and OU.
They seem to be gaining momentum as this game is going on. Hopefully, that’s a sign of a team figuring out what personell can and can’t do.
I think it’s too early to make a judgment on Crawford so far. He’s still learning the system, and his offensive line has yet to gel.
/How’s that for some justification?
by KennyGregoryRockThaCradle on Sep 6, 2008 8:49 PM CDT 0 recs
Agreed.
I think it is way too early to claim that Crawford was a bust and that it was a mistake to recruit him.
Still, it is a little disconcerting that he has struggled as much as he has thus far in his college career.

Wow.
Angus Quigley looked really good there at the end of the half.
More thoughts late, late tonight.
by rockchalk on Sep 6, 2008 9:18 PM CDT 0 recs
Yep
Hard to know how much of that is Quigley himself, and how much of that is just wearing your oppponent down. Looking ahead to next week, USF is tied with UCF with about a minute to go. ESPN2- should be an exciting finish.

Sorry I missed it I had a wedding...
clearly that guy is not a true friend:) Watched it on DVR late last night enjoyed the comments and Daylight might be a pretty good option for Daymonds nickname I’m still trying to come up with something to contribute on that as well.
