Hawk Talk...The Morning After Edition(WK3)

A look at news and notes about Jayhawks and upcoming opponents...

This one isn't going to be fun...

  • KC Star recap of the game...i think the headline is a bit harsh.
  • Game grades and quarterly recap.
  • I don't believe in a "good" loss...but Jason Whitlock does point out some positives.
  • This is a day old and written before the game, but I think we could all use a feel good story about Todd Reesing so we can remember how lucky we are.
  • LJ World recap of the game.
  • Tom Keegan's take on the game and who's to blame.
  • The box score...interesting note attendance 58,000 and wow was it loud there at times or what.

Here are seme looks from the Florida perspective...but not too many.

My thoughts...Again I don't believe in a "good" loss and this one was tough to swallow, but two years ago if you would have told me we would lose to a top 20 team on the road on a last second field goal, I would have said thank you for a good night of football.

It's clear that our front lines are a major weakness, we don't get pressure and we can't stop pressure with our lines.  Despite that Todd Reesing was a stud again.  The two drives that brought us back from 34-20 to tie the game were absolutely incredible.  It looked like a backyard game when your playcall is telling your receivers to get open and Todd would buy enough time to make it happen.  The interception was a tough play...but sometimes you take those chances on the road and after sleeping on it I wouldn't change it.

Another three guys that I felt deserve major kudos: Kerry Meier, Johnathan Wilson, James Holt.  All three showed up to play and Kerry Meier is a gamer no question.

Players I wished would have showed up:  offensive line, defensive line, Briscoe, Stuckey, Rivera, Mortensen.  The line play for obvious reasons, Briscoe didn't get it done, and Stuckey, Rivera and Mortensen didn't lead the way I would have hoped on defense.

Despite the loss, we gained some valuable experience we didn't gain last year at this time.  We lost a close game on the road to a ranked team and maybe this helps us avoid a loss against someone we should beat or maybe it gives us an edge against a team we shouldn't.  Last year was incredible, clearly this year was going to be different and while none of us wanted it to come we were going to lose this year more than last.  My hope is still 8-4 with the remaining losses coming from Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.  The one we squeek out is Texas Tech at home, the one that could get away from us is Nebraska on the road.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

Good insight

But I hope we win vs. Missouri. That would be huge for the program, more so than TT, but they’re tough, so hopefully we can get motivated for that.

When another vilely scrawny field is silly, some arena toward an instinct can be profound to a sincere jail.

would love nothing more than a win over Missouri and your right it would be huge...

but I also thing that TT is just as important.

It’s absolutely absurd to already mark down Mizzou as a loss. Those guys have shown huge weaknesses in both rushing and passing defense so far this season. Even if on paper they’re the better team, everyone here has watched far too much college sports in their lives to think that’s conclusive in a rivalry series.

That article from McCollough is rediculous. No more reason to pay attention to Kansas? Really? They lost to a top 15 team on the road on a last second field goal. When Ohio State does that later this season, will there be “no more reason to pay attention” to them? Of course not.

Our biggest issues right now are in the trenches. But those issues are due to young players. The best thing about young players? They improve with more experience.

Between play selection, personell rotation solidification, and wrote repetition, the running game will improve. When that happens, KU will again have a dynamic offensive attack that will allow them to compete with anyone.

After watching the Chiefs debacle today, I absolutely refuse to give up any hope I have in KU football. Right now, when it comes to sports, it’s all I have.

It's just a prediction...

I will be at arrowhead cheering my ass off for a win…but when I run down the schedule to give my 8-4 prediction that is a game that I see as more likely a loss than a win. It is not marked down as a certain in any way because in rivalry games all bets are off, but If I’m going to make a statement like 8-4 I just wanted to support my argument with the remaining losses and some potential 50/50 games that could swing it. I’m not giving up hope either Kenny and like I said if you had told me two years ago that we would lose to a top 20 team on the road on a last second field goal, I would have told you Kansas football has come a long way…and we have, and there is still work to be done.

A little pessimistic, I think..

8-4 is a possible record, with the exact losses you have marked. I’m not even positive they can win in Lincoln (though I’m not as on-board yet with the Huskers as many seem to be). However, to already chalk up a loss to Texas and call Tech a squeak out is a little premature, I think.

This team is very much different at home. And just as importantly, the line will have had another month+ to figure things out and hopefully show shome improvement. I’ll be the first to admit that even if they fix all of their problems they aren’t finsihing out the season without another loss, but their are still plenty of potential W’s on the schedule.

again this is just a prediction

and with that just letting you know exactly who my W’s and L’s are…it might be a bit premature to say we are a very much different team at home, when we haven’t played an opponent of South Florida’s caliber at home this year, but your exactly right we could just as easily beat both Texas and Tech at home and I hope we do. Still, until I see us control a game from the line of scrimmage against a solid opponent I’m sticking with my 8-4 and I hope I can make an adjustment after ISU and CU…The fact of the matter is the last six games of the year should make or break the season if we take care of business in the next three games.
