Open Game Thread :: Game #1 :: Florida International 0-0 (0-0) vs. #14 Kansas 0-0 (0-0)
It's finally here.
We are finally playing football.
Keys are upcoming (the post will be edited), but in all seriousness, there are basically only two keys. To get our young guys some playing time and in-game experience and to stay healthy. Sure, FIU will be better than last year, but we are better too.
With that said, I'll say it is the same, exact score as last season: Kansas wins 52-07.
I'll be back 30 minutes prior to game time...

I just found a radio feed. Finally.
In case anyone else is looking, I found it at the FIU Official Page. It is FIU radio guys, but it is better than nothing.
Of course, now it is telling me I have to download more crap. This has been a disaster..
OK start thus far...
The fumble sucks, but we still look to be doing good after we stopped them on 4th down.
TD Crawford! OK, I think we’re good now. We’ve settled down.
Darius Parish out there already...
Stuffed the RB for a loss.
I’m telling you, he is going to be a beast.
FIU Announcers just said
“there isn’t an empty seat in the building. And everyone’s wearing blue.”
That is the best quote in the history of the world. I know it is the season opener, but we still have changed the entire frickin’ program in just 12 months. Wow.
Crap.
Dexton Fields is hurt and not getting up.
Hopefully he is OK. Holding the left knee according to announcers…
Paging Daymond Patterson…
3rd and Goal on the 3.
If we score here, the game is pretty much over. If not, and we are stuck to a FG, FIU is still breathing.
TD Briscoe!
Good.
Game Over.
…
Daymond Patterson is a stud. That punt return (like 5 minutes after the TD, but whatevs) was insane, or at least it sounded like that.
Oh, and now a punt return for a TD by Daymond.
I am already falling love with my kid.
Probably my favorite player on the team, already. Wow.
Punt Return D sucks.
OK, last year we only gave up 7 points. Better be the same this year, or it is obviously a failure… ;)
Wow.
Another great play by Daymond.
Quick, we need a nickname. By the end of the game, I’ll have one. I need one for my fav player on the entire frickin’ team.
No fun.
Yeah, we responded with a TD, but it wasn’t a pretty drive and then Grady Fowler shanked the extra point.
Still an awesome first half; about exactly what I expected. Shoddy start offensively, but have been pretty much awesome since and our D has been flat-out dominant. They keep on talking about how good and “Championship-quality” our D is.
Pretty good announcing, actually, from the FIU Announcers.
Oh, and also nice to see the 47-yard FG from Rojas. Maybe he can do both exclusively, if Fowler can’t nail the extra points (admittedly, the radio guys basically blamed it on the bad snap).
Anything but "D Pat"
Just finished up my fantasy draft, and now its time to focus on what’s important: willing Misery to a loss.
Sparky already has 28 attempts… and he’s completed 21. What a stud.

FG to end the half by FIU.
So, at halftime, the score is 30-10.
And, besides that last, flukey drive where we were likely playing prevent, our D has been fantastic. Everything besides the trashy punt return D and the quickie FG they just made, it has been an absolutely fantastic half.
Not as sweet as Oklahoma, mind you, who is currently up by a robust score of 50-0 (I mean, I know Chatanooga is a bad 1-AA team, but still…) before halftime. Or even as good as K-State, who is beating North Texas 28-0; UNT is about the same level as FIU, although I think FIU has a decent chance of surprising some people and winning a handful of games.
OK, I have an idea for Daymond's nickname:
Double Play, or DP for short :: They are his initials (DP), plus it points to him being both a slot receiver and a PR. I like it.
We’ll have a vote soon, sometime after the game tonight/tomorrow, because it is imperative we get a nickname for him, and soon. The next four years are going to be a blast, watching him play.
FIU Announcers just said
that today’s attendance is a record crowd. And keep in mind, this is against Florida frickin’ Internatioanl. Hopefully we break the record Texas or Tech.
FG for Rojas.
Then an INT by Phillip Strozier in nickel coverage.
The rout is on, not that anyone really doubted it anyways.
Way off topic, but...
Uhhh…. KU men’s basketball is only up one point at half time against Carleton. Rough start without the twins, I guess.

Wow.
Yea, this team is going to be crazy young. Lots of ups-and-downs, lots of inconsistent play. Basically the opposite of the football team, I think.
Obviously, we decided to start out the year on a low. But it isn’t as crazy as you might think. Sherron is fat, no Morris twins and nearly every player is completely untested (only Aldrich, really).
Another TD, the third of the day from Reesing to Briscoe.
Dez has caught 8 passes today, none of them over 10 yards and only for a combined 47 yards. Still, can’t argue with the 3 scores.
Our running game has pretty much sucked this game. Like, a helluva lot. They are obviously keying on the running game and giving us almost anything we want through the air, but still. We need more than 71 rushing yards against Florida frickin’ International. Although, we should improve in the 4th quarter when the reserves are in and we’re just trying to run out the clock.
Running Game Struggles
Might that have something to do with breaking in two new tackles? Seems like the short passes would be the best way to keep the pressure off of them.

Future Opponent Update:
Louisiana Tech, next week’s opponent, is on ESPN2 right now. They are beating Mississippi State at home 14-19, but a lot of that is virtue of turnovers. Miss State is way worse than we are, and the game is being played in Ruston, LA, but still. We will need a better running game to win the game next week.
Not to freak out already, or anything, for an opponent like LaTech, but still…
Also, Illannoy is beating MU right now...13 - 10.
It would make me happy to see Mizzou lose, for obvious reasons, but it would make the Big 12 look a hella worse.
Oh, and Maclin just returned a kick, so Moo is back on top.
One last other games' update:
Arkansas State, the same team who took Texas down to the wire last year on the opening weekend, is currently beating Texas A&M 15-14 with 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.
And just for the record, Utah > Michigan is not an upset. At all. Like, for real, at all. Utah is a way better team. Michigan wasn’t that good last year, and they are changing offensive systems without having near the personnel for it (very Callahan-like, if you think about it) and losing almost all of their defensive players. I think they will be lucky to make a bowl this year. Utah, on the other hand, has an outside chance of making a BCS bowl. Frankly, I would have considered it an upset for Michigan to beat Utah.
The biggest upset of the day, so far (Ark State > A&M would be the biggest IMO) is BGSU over Pitt, but the Panthers were so incredibly overrated (and they are coached by Dave Wandstadt, so feel sorry for them) that maybe, by the end of the year, it won’t be considered much of an upset.
ECU over VT
The Pirates’ big win has to be the biggest story today, doesn’t it? Even if aTm loses, at least they’re in a transition year with a new coach. What’s the Hokies’ excuse?

Yea, but East Carolina is a damn good football team.
They are clearly the best team in CUSA, and I think will turn some heads next week against West Virginia (I’ll go on the record as saying that they win, even).
Plus, Va Tech lost a bazillion players (including their top 4 WRs), kicked off Brandon Ore and have Sean Glennon as their QB. They aren’t that hot. I mean, seriously. Glennon?
An upset, yes. But I think a smaller one than both Ark State over A&M and BGSU over Pitt. Although the BGSU over Pitt is debatable, I guess.
Pick thrown by Reesing.
Two thoughts:
1) Boooo INTs. Hopefully this was more of a lack of-freaking-out kind of stuff, cause I hate INTs.
2) Why isn’t Meier in there?
Attendance
From ESPN:
The crowd (52,112) broke the mark of 51,910 which watched the resurgent Jayhawks beat longtime nemesis Nebraska 76-39 last year, a game when Briscoe also had three TDs. It also broke by 4,000 the Memorial Stadium record for a nonconference game.
