Offensive Tackles???
Reading practice notes both here and elsewhere it appears clear our offensive line is pretty set on the interior. The tackle spots on the other hand seem far from taken. With that assumption who do you want to see at these spots? How would your ideal offensive line take shape with the limited knowledge we all have about the players in contention?
There are the most commonly talked about favorites amongst fans of Spikes and Wolfe. To big prototypical tackles from a size standpoint but still very untested. Matt Darton provides another possibility with more experience and possibly more stability that a veteran can bring. He played in a reserve roll last year and filled in with limited success in my opinion for Collins in situations.
The wild card in all this is Jeremiah Hatch. Several reports are stating he is showing great footwork, strength and posing a real challenge at the left tackle spot. Coach Mangino has been quoted in saying he will find his way on the line this year. If this is true and he continues to prove his worth through the preseason practices he gets my vote and I would love to see him anchor the right side. At only 6'3" he wouldn't appear to have the size of a traditional left tackle but if he is pushing for time there why not the move to right tackle. If the move makes sense and this guy has the ability think about the continuity that could be afforded this team on the offensive line for the next four years. Jeff Spikes 6'6" 300+ LT and Jeremiah Hatch 6'3" 315 RT. These two are only redshirt freshman and could anchor this line for the next four years with the ability to learn from one of our most seasoned interior lines in their first year on the field. Seems like a great opportunity to me and one I would love to see.
All that said whatever the Maginius determines to be the best is probably so but I love the possibility of a Spikes, Mayes, Cantrell, Hartley, Hatch offensive line taking the field this year.
