Joe Bob Clements Back to Manhattan

I spoke with a recruit tonight and it would appear that defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements is headed back to Manhatten to help Bill Snyder in his attempt at reviving the Wildcat program.

Clements came to Kansas by way of San Diego State last year and after only one year with the Jayhawks will be headed back to his Alma Mater.  I can't say I'm surprised by the news, Clements who played under Snyder and was recruited by Mangino while he was an assistant at K-State has long standing ties to the Wildcat program and while he has been a Jayhawk for the year, he wasn't likely to remain a Jayhawk forever.

Now on to the business of finding an upgrade at this coaching spot in the offseason.

Yeah, maybe I was in in the minority.

But I never was his biggest fan. Basically, whoever replaces him needs to be a damn good recruiter, as that is priority number one. Sure, there are some outstanding coaches that can take pretty bad players and turn them into good ones, but I’d still prefer someone who is halfway decent at coaching up talent but can get a bunch of it here to someone who struggles getting players with NFL-caliber here but can coach them up to compete.

As long, of course, as the stronger recruiter is a good enough coach not to ruin said prospects.

Also, good scoop Denver.

It appears you beat out most news outlets, everyone I can see save the Rivals’ site. Which certainly is impressive, given Rivals’ immense series of connections and stuff.

Awesome.

I had not heard this...

but knowing that he has a gigantic powercat tattoo on his back, I certainly expected it and really don’t take any issue with it. Maybe he’s a big loss, but I’m not too attached…

I would agree...

nothing against the guy at all and from what I understand he was well liked but it’s hard to be too attached when he has only been around for a year.

It’s hard to be too attached and it hard to even understand if he was capable of the job with us. Our defensive line was horrible all year. Granted, we lost an amazing DT, but we haven’t seen much of an improvement from him. I as well hope the next DL coach is a monster recruiter. Screw the coaching to an extent, we need to close the talent gaps.

+1

on the talent gap…but I do think part of the problem was youth at the d-line this year…at least on the interior, talent was more of the issue at end where you had Brorson, Wheeler and Larson. God love em all but they weren’t Big12 ends.
