Withey to KU

http://kansas.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?ReturnTo=&sid=&script=content.asp&cid=893231&fid=&tid=&mid=&rid=

We just landed our next great big man. He'll be eligible to play Spring of 2009 and will have a full year to practice with team and learn from coach Manning.

The following is from a story post by theshiver.com with a link provided at the bottom.
Withey will be eligible to join his new Jayhawk teammates on the court at the semester break in 2009. With almost a year to work on his game and school, Withey doesn’t see that as a bad thing.

"I think it’s really a blessing in disguise. I can focus on getting stronger and make it a real focus. I can work on my game for the next year without distractions and then be ready to hop in next year and show everybody what I can do," said Withey about having to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Withey will certainly be an immediate impact player for the Jayhawks during the 2009-2010 season. With the youth on this year’s team, next year will be full of experienced players poised for a run at the title. According to Withey, he has some tools to help in that championship run.

"I will work on my ‘back to the basket’ game and work to add strength, but I will bring a defensive presence. I will block shots, run the floor, and dunk the ball. I can play either the 4 or 5," said Withey about his game.
I'm assuming it meant...

Spring 2010 which would be spring of next season and that is great news for this team and I certainly think could make for a dangerous Kansas team in the tournament in the 2009-2010 year…

mid-term

I believe this makes him eligible as soon as finals are done in Dec 09.

Maybe the Arizona game if we have a rematch? Is there a preliminary opponent list for next season?

Go away! Guys, you're gonna wake up my Mom!

Yes. Spring of ‘10 would be correct. Spring of ’09 is just a few months away. He will be able to practice in Spring ’09 against Cole and have a full summer with coach Manning before he gets to practice more against the rest of the team. The only thing he might have trouble with is conditioning. It’s hard to be in “game shape” without playing in games. Also important to note: All guys his size have trouble with conditioning.

Howards Legacy, I do not know if he will be eligible after finals, 1 full year to the day after enrolling, or when the Spring academic semester starts.

Also, I believe we are done with Arizona as it was a home-home.

What I get out of this

He can practice with us this spring, and play next year. It’d be stupid if he couldn’t play until after next season.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

giants, no one is saying Withey will miss all of next year. The confusion is when in the spring he will be able to play in games. I do not know if he will be elibible immediately after Fall finals are completed (say roughly December 17th or so), one full year to the exact day in which he enrolls at KU to become an “official” Jayhawk (say roughtly Dec. 24th or whenever he actually enrolls), or finally when the Spring 2010 academic semester starts (say roughly January 15th).

So, he will be playing in the Spring, but the question I posed spans almost a full month of possible dates.

Ok

I misunderstood you guys. Sorry.

It's all swell

I figured as much.

However, this still doesn’t resolve my question.

I think it's very similar to the Micah Downs scenario...

when he left KU he enrolled at Gonzago for 2nd semester and was then eligible one year following.

This Guy Has the Goods

Here’s a nice Youtube clip of him- legit 7 footer with good shot blocking instincts. Gets a lot of easy dunks in this clip due to his size and uninterested defense being played in AAU games. But, about halfway through the clip, he nails a three, then does a nice drive for a layup.

If Cole continues to get schooled by shorter, quicker guys (thereby staying in school for another year), these two could be a formidable combination next year.

You guys got a good one...

At our old blog, The Kennel Report, we were able to chat with Withey’s old recruiting coordinator and personal trainer, Trent Suzuki. He had some great things to say. I always figured it would wind up being Kansas or maybe Texas but I wish the Zags could have grabbed him.

Well done, Happy Holidays.

We need this guy now

Just because of the extra height he provides in practice – it’ll be very beneficial for cole to finally have someone his height/taller to practice against, because those are the guys he hasn’t been able to practice for yet.

Agreed...

Cole needs to go rounds with some size and toughness like he did last year w/Kaun, Jackson and Arthur…clearly as we saw against UNC it paid big dividends.

Withey

The good thing about Withey practicing now is he will have to toughen up with playing against Aldrich, which will in turn help Cole too. Also, he will be in the weight room and working out with the team. By the time he is eligible next January he will be very prepared. Next year has great potential for us overall.
