Recruits to Visit Kansas this Weekend

This weekend Coach Mangino, the coaching staff and players will host several key recruits for the 2009 class.  As reported on JayhawkSlant.com the December 19th visit list includes some big names for what could be a great class for the Jayhawks.

Ronnie Wingo and Toben Opurum are both 4-Star running backs and bigger backs that would compliment already committed Deshaun Sands.  Wingo is more of the athletic type back and has already visited Missouri with further intentions of officials to Illinois, Arkansas and possibly one more.  Opurum is a big physical back and has already visited Notre Dame and Purdue.  I did chat with him briefly this week and it looks like this might be his final visit.  The two other schools that he mentioned might see a visit were Arkansas and Florida although both are looking less likely.

The other big target for Kansas is 6'5" Arlington Texas receiver Chris Omigie.  This will be his final official after visiting several schools including fellow Big 12 schools Nebraska and Baylor.

Several other names have floated around including Tevin Mims, Tracy Moore, Terrel Williams and several junior college prospects but it appears many are up in the air at this point.  I'll be digging around next week and will try to provide further updates as we get into a slower time around the bowl game but it goes without saying that there will surely be a few surprises and it could be a good weekend for the future of Kansas football.

Wingo

If we could get him that would be huge. I would expect him to come in and contribute with Sharp immediately next year. I read something on rivals that he really liked his visit to Mizzou, though. Hopefully there are still some girls sticking around after finals this weekend for Wingo to see. :)

Mizzou

Yeah – I saw that too. I haven’t heard too much about their practice facilities but ours has been getting rave reviews. I’m not sure how effective that will be when trying to lure what is essentially a hometown kid. With such a big recruiting weekend the ‘Hawks MUST crush Temple tomorrow and AFH better be rockin’!!!

My feeling and I think others would say the same...

Wingo is probably a long shot for Kansas but getting him in for a visit when he is an in state stud for Missouri is a bit of a moral victory regardless.

Interesting

I saw Toben’s name come up before – I think I was parusing Scouts.inc. He’s listed as a fullback – our spread doesn’t much use a FB, I wonder if he will switch to Tight End (he has quite a few receptions) or if it would be more like a B-Mac transition.

Toben...

would be used as a halfback in our offense. Think faster, more athletic McAnderson or a more polished Quigley.

A big reason we are getting such a big look from him is that we are offering that option while many schools want to use him strictly as a fullback.

Ed Warriner

Has there been any discussion of anyone wanting poach him for a head coach position? that would not be good…Losing Bill Young hurt enough

His name has come up at Iowa State...

but haven’t heard too much…I think he might be another year away from getting some big looks.

Also, Withey’s decision will be coming over the slow holiday period. Also, the football recruits will be interesting to follow. One member from this past weekend has already commited. A nice looking, athletic DT who played DE. From Blinn CC in Texas and should be able to step into the rotation immediately.
