Very Premature 2010 Recruiting Notes

I know we haven't even wrapped up the 2009 class yet and the 2010 season seems a long way out.  Regardless scout.com has release their Top 100 of 2010 and I thought it might be of interest.  This particular article is free to anyone and there are some interesting prospects in the state of Kansas and around the Kansas City area that Coach Mangino will be looking to reel in.  Here is a quick high level summary.

Justin McCay 5 Star WR out of Bishop Miege HS in the Kansas City area.  The 6.3' 200 pounder has great size, great speed and has been to Lawrence a couple of times already.  Although it's very early and there are some big names involved Kansas appears to be a serious option.

Blake Bell is a 4 star quarterback out of the Wichita area.  Mark Mangino hasn't had the best fortune in the city that has produced a lot of instate talent in recent years but again it would appear Bell will give KU a shot.  At 6'6" 215 pounds Kansas will see serious competition to gain Bell's services and as a prototypical NFL prospect at the quarterback spot Bell would be a huge pickup for Kansas.

Keeston Terry a 4 star WR out of Blue Springs is the son of a former Jayhawk Doug Terry.

I had a chance to chat with Terry briefly tonight and he said Kansas will obviously get a look since both his parents and high school coach attended there.  In terms of what is most important to him in selecting a school Terry said, "My relationship with the coaches, where they want me on the field and where I stack up in the depth chart."  He did make sure to point out that the last one isn't as big of a deal because he fully expects to earn his spot on the field and isn't expecting anything to be given to him.

Clint Bowen will be the lead recruiter for Terry who right now has a preliminary list of Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State, North Carolina, Florida State, Iowa and most recently Alabama.

Very interesting...

thanks for the post. Really speaks to our progress that we’re in on all these guys.

You mentioned that Bowen is the lead recruiter on Terry – do we project him on defense?

I didn't get a chance to ask him...

his preference for where he would play but I am assuming at this point based on some of the questions he asked me that he is hoping for a look at the WR spot.

clearly with Bowen as the lead recruiter I too was curious but I think it might have more to do with the relationship piece than anything. Bowen has some strong ties in the local area.

I find that

coaches and coordinators often do not recruit positions that they directly coach. They are usually assigned regions. If you go on Rivals you can see what coaches have recruited what players in the past and you’ll see what I mean. For instance, this year Ed Warriner is focused almost soley on Big 10 country – Ohio/Illinois/Michigan

I also noticed...

That we were on three other lists as well.

WR – Marcus Lucas (Liberty, MO) – who has KU, MU, KSU.

DE – Corey Nelson (Dallas) – Florida, Kansas, Nerbaska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M, Tech

OT – Evan Washington (DeSoto, TX) – who has Houston, Kansas, Miami. & Tech

Given theri locations and list of schools, I’d say we have a good shot at locas, a decent chance at Washington while Nelson may be a bit of a longshot. You know anything more than this?

At this point I can't say I know a lot on any of these...

Lucas’ name hasn’t come up in my conversations so far which surprised me when I saw his name and where he was from.

As far as the other two, I plan on doing a little more digging after the 2009 class is wrapped up and those guys will be some of the first on my list. Certainly would be 2 areas of need and big pickups if Kansas was able to land some of these guys.

Awesome

Love the recruiting updates Denver.

Well I personally will only be satisfied if we get at least 2 of those 3 area guys (OK, I should really be happy with getting one) because we have to start locking up the talent in our own backyard. Terry is the one that we have to be able to get, 2 parents who went to KU? Let’s hope he doesn’t want to live in that shadow or some cliche like that.

More FB recruiting please

God I love this stuff. Why are we not pursuing Junction City OT Justin Aumen??

Believe we are full on O-Line...

I’m sure they are at least in contact with him but at this point we have some solid depth at the O-Line already lined up and there are more urgent positions of need.

Typically we can probably expect 3 maybe 4 O-lineman per class and this year we are at 3 w/Howard, Spencer, Mabry. Last year we took 4 w/Leuken, D’Cuhnda, John Williams and Trevor Marongelli. We also got a couple strong walk ons w/JD Hill and Joe Semple and don’t forget our transfer from Wisky who will probably see the field next year w/Thorson.

All in all the O-Line is in good hands w/the new facilities and the fact that we are bringing in size that we didn’t used to we should be in good shape.

A little sidenote Jeremiah Hatch and Jeff Spikes both recieved freshman all american honors w/different publications/websites.

Really??

Good for them. I hadn’t read that, I’ll need to google. I guess swapping sides really helped. I know that after the So Fla game our tackle play was much improved. Its a good thing that we have so much quality depth that we’re not pursuing other solid prospects. Good good.
