Recruiting Update!

If you haven't heard of Jeff Withey from San Diego California in the class of 2008 the big man is strongly considering the University of Kansas as an option of transfering at the end of the semester from Arizona.  Originally Jeff gave a verbal commitment to Louisville, then changed to Arizona, however with Lute Olson's departure, Withey as asked to be released.

The NCAA ha agreed which will allow Withey to join a team this spring of 09.  While not yet confirmed, many think the choice he will make is Kansas, a quote and link are attached to give creedance to the report.

At 7'0 this would be a great addition!  Like Cole he has always played center, has good soft hands, athletic, and a nice mid range shot.  Perhaps this is why Cheek went with Villanova (probably speculating too much) so self could give the last scholarship to Withey!

Imagine two guys at 6'11 and 7'0 running the floor together!

"The San Diego high school coach of 7-foot center Jeff Withey said he expects Withey to pick Kansas over Gonzaga and Texas. "I

think he's about 80 percent Kansas," Waheed Mitchell said. Withey, ranked the No. 8 senior center in the nation by Scout.com and Rivals.com last season, was just released from his Arizona letter of intent. He quit practicing with the Wildcats after Olson resigned."

Thanks for the update...

I’m curious when he would be eligible. Since he didn’t play at all this fall would he be good to go next fall or would he have to wait until spring. Either way he would definitely add some depth and our team would be extremely loaded come tourney time next year.

Front line rotation of:

Withey, Aldrich, Robinson, Morris/Thomas

Wings:

Other Morris, Releford (I think he’ll improve a lot by next year)

Guards: (assuming Collins is gone)

Taylor, Little, Johnson, Reed, Morningstar, Appleton and dare I say Wall

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

next year

Withey will be available second semester because he was still on the UofA team this semester. Even though he didn’t practice and wanted out UofA still considered him on the team because they originally weren’t gong to release him. The good thing is now he is practicing and in the weight room with us so he will be a second semester freshman when we get him.
Frontline:
Withey(come january), Marcus Morris, Aldrich, Robinson,
Thomas or Markief(I don’t see both of them in the rotation and Markieff isn’t improving and can’t score)

Wings:
Little, Releford

Guards:
Collins, Johnson, Taylor, Morningstar

Hasn't Self said that...

Marcus’ more natural position is as a big wing…at least I think he said that about Marcus, could’ve been Markieff.

If so I think we could still see them both in the rotation.

They get in eachothers way
Imagine two guys at 6’11 and 7’0 running the floor together!

ala the Lopez twins at Stanford.

The best way to use them is split time, that way you never HAVE to go small unless you want to.

Sounds like Withey...

while a 7 footer isn’t as much a back to the basket type player as Cole.

I think your right though more than anything this gives you some serious size in a rotation. Likely seeing these two splitting minutes as opposed to being on the court at the same time.

more to see

Marcus can play the 3 or 4. Markieff hasn’t impressed me yet, but that is why being patient this year will be vital for us all. They are only freshman, but at this point Marcus, Travis and Tyshawn are the ones I like to see on the floor as far as the freshmen with the most consistency.

Morningstar is serviceable, but Reed makes me cringe because I do not think he will get much better. I would love for Teehan to go away because as far as i am concerned he is worthless. Maybe Thomas needs to transfer since he isn’t doing anything and doesn’t look like he will. Oh well, we take the good with the bad and hope for improvement. Last year’s championship team wasn’t built in a day either.

I think Teahen

is a walk-on. He was recruited by some decent schools but since money wasn’t an issue, he chose to come to KU and walk-on. As for Quntrell, I think he got in Self’s doghouse early on. I think as our big men continue to struggle and if Mario redshirts you will see a lot more of Thomas in league play.
