Ask a Husker

Hey, Jayhawkers - Jon Johnston aka Corn Blight from the Nebraska site Corn Nation here. In preparation for this Saturday's game in Lincoln, I figured I'd give all y'all a chance to ask any questions you might have about this year's Nebraska team.

I don't have a lot of limitations... nor inhibitions for that matter. So.... ask away and I'll try to do my best to give you an answer, whatever the question may be.

We have created a travel guide to Lincoln for those of you who'll be making the trip.

Also, feel free to stop by Corn Nation and ask us any questions if you like.

What’s the future look like in the eyes of Nebraska fans? Are they going to be patient with Pelini, or Solich him into the ground?

Also, what are Nebraska fans’ thoughts on KU’s program and the direction it’s heading? Are they angry about the drubbing from last season, or did they realize it was somewhat overdue?

we

Solich him into the ground…. ouch!

Husker fans realize that it’s going to take a while for us to get back to fielding a team that will consistently compete for the Big 12 title, so we’ll be patient. Solich’s firiing came about because of an egomaniac athletic director. You know the type of person, you go out with them for a while, you get married, and suddenly their insecurities come out, they become OCB-based control freaks, lashing out at everything that may challenge their authority……. I’m rambling aren’t I?

KU’s program. Honestly when Mangino was first hired, I thought he was an okay coach, but it took him a while to get things going, so he became somewhat of a joke. The general feeling is that you guys field a good team every 10 years, then become a basketball school once again. Hate to say that, but we’re waiting to see if you can maintain the level you were at last season.

Haha

I like the analogy you used about the athletic director.

As far as the eyes of KU’s football program, I’m not surprised by that sentiment towards KU, and we definitely need to finish at least 8-4 this season (that includes beating the Huskers in Lincoln), and then have another 8+ win season next season in our gauntlet schedule cycle to really gain some respect around the league.

I know it’s got to hurt those Husker fans that follow recruiting to know that we snatched DE Tyrone Sellers out from under them, in the glory days, that never would’ve happened.

I didn't answer

how we felt about last season. It’s the short attention span I have.

Am I angry…. are we angry about last season’s massive score?

No. Last season was an aberration to Husker fans. I think most of us understood the score (I’ll post a preview including the 36-year win streak tomorrow) and why it happened. Me, I really just felt sad for our players. It was clear they were lost, their confidence shot, and their coaching staff helpless to do anything about it.

The problem with this season is…. the offenses in the Big 12 are so good and the defenses bad enough, everyone has to keep scoring, so you see these massive scores because no one can afford to let up.

you can

thank his high school coach for part of that. Some goes to Callahan not thinking that Nebraska boys could play football and not recruiting him hard enough but his HS coach has contacts at KSU and tried to stir him in that direction (rumor around here, I live 40 miles from him, was that he was going to KSU along with Cherry and Vontz who are also from McCook but they told him not too due to Prince so he went to KU). I think if Pelini had been hired one year earlier he would have had Sellers. I have seen him play and think he is actually a better TE then DE. He is a good athlete and a termendous individual. You will like him.

Joe Ganz

It seems to me like your QB tends to be the forgotten one of the Big 12 bunch. The stats are impressive (68.6% completions, 152.21 passer rating), but is generally thought of as outside that “main group” of McCoy, Daniel, Harrell, Bradford, and (sometimes) Reesing. Tell us about his season so far. What are his strengths and weaknesses?

Would you agree he’s overshadowed nationally? If he were the quarterback of, say, LSU, would we hear a lot more about him?

Finally, if Nebraska is down four points with two minutes to play, no timeouts, and 80 yards to go, would you have faith that he could pull out the victory?

will

Ganz strengths – he knows the offense very well. Due to a lot of baseball experience, he’s accurate on the run, or at least way more accurate than your average quarterback. He is always a threat to run, but he hasn’t done that much this season, preferring to hold the ball longer and let his two senior receivers, Todd Peterson and Nate Swift, make plays. Together they do this very well.

His weakness – he’s had a tendency to try to do too much which leads to mistakes. That’s his biggest weakness.

He is overshadowed nationally, but we haven’t won a big game yet, so maybe that’s deserved.

Clutch – yeah, I do, but it’s maybe not as much Joe Ganz as it is Nate Swift. Swift makes big plays when you need him and as I stated, he and Ganz are on the same page. Think Kerry Meier and Todd Reesing, with Swift having a little more speed.

What is the perception of Kansas football in Nebraska...

has it changed of late? Is there a respect at all for what Mangino has done? etc.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

I'll say this

I like Mark Mangino as a coach. I’m glad you guys had the patience to keep him around until he could get things going.

Having said that, I hope we kick your ass Saturday. :)

I think

the best thing KU did was to hire Mangino (fat bastard). He is a good football coach and has KU going in the right direction. Most of the people I talk to relize that KU is no longer the easy win they used to be. We know you are a good team and that makes us feel a whole lot better about yesterdays victory. I am glad you guys have fielded a competitive football team because it make the North look better and it makes NU look better when we beat you. That wasn’t meant as arrogant or anything but yesterdays victory sure looks better then any we had 10-12 years ago.

good luck the rest of the season and win out. Beat Mizzu.
