Open Game Thread :: Game #4 :: #23 Kansas 3-0 (0-0) vs. Syracuse 4-0 (0-0)
Kansas Jayhawks at Syracuse Orange, Nov 25, 2008 9:20 PM CST
Tonight should be oodles of fun. Syracuse is clearly a better team than we are, and I have kinda-sorta been expecting a loss to the 'Cuse/Florida winner all along. That isn't to say we won't win, in fact, given last night's performance, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us win.
But it is nice for us to play an intense game this early on in the season, and I am legitimately excited for it. Much more excited than I usually am about college basketball in November.
No keys tonight or nothing, I really don't know too much about the Orange. However, I will say one thing: we have to make outside shots. It is near-impossible to beat a zone without knocking down threes, and we haven't really shown an ability to make outside shots thus far this season. SC can, sure, but I can't say with a straight face that anyone else definitively can. Tyrel Reed probably can, from everything I've read and some flashes I've seen, but he has yet to come out and prove it. Tonight would be a mighty fine time to break out, Tyrel. Or, really, anyone not named Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins.
With all of that said, I'll take the optimistic route. I rarely, if ever, actually predict us to lose a game on these Open Game Thread thing-a-ma-bobs, and I certainly am not going to predict a loss tonight. We start off a little shaky, but Cole keeps us in the game throughout the first half and we knock down enough shots in the second half, led by a breakout performance from my boy, Tyrel Reed, (well, Travis Releford is more of my boy, but he certainly isn't Bill Self's boy, as evidenced by his playing time) who will knock down 4 treys. Yeah, boy.
Kansas wins 72-67.
And check back in after the game, as we will breakdown the game tonight, hopefully. The rest of the week will mostly be devoted to the football team, however, as we apparently have some rivalry game on Saturday. Still, there will be some basketball content, particularly concerning Self's updated rotation and all of that fun stuff.
Oh, and I should be here ALL night tonight. At least hopefully.
Rock it. Chalk it. Talk it.

Update.
Actually, I will be missing the opening of the game. Hopefully, with my DVR, I can catch up by halftime.
Hopefully.
My Blues won in a shootout
So its already been a good night. Now Western Mich and Ball State needs to wrap it up…
Nevermind, I'm here.
Just in time to see the end of the Ball State-Western Michigan football game.
Hopefully we’ll get to see all of the game.
Yep. Awesome.
OK, here we go…
Brady with the block!
Yeah, boy. And it leads to an awesome player by Tyshawn.
Honestly, even though Brady is a pretty bad shooter, it is almost impossible not to love him.
Anyone else
see that #15 on his back and keep thinking…Mario Chalmers. I do a double take about 5 times a game
That is what my dad keeps on saying.
I still say he reminds me more of Sherron Collins, but I may be wrong.
I think
its more just seeing that 15 running on the court. He plays a different game but its still nice to see
It's hard to differentiate between the two Morrisses.
But if I had to pick, I would say that Marcus is more like Julian. More of a 3-type who can make outside shots.
But I really can’t say for sure.
Zone Busters are the Morris twins.
They hit that free throw jumper all day and we win. If not, somebody is going to have to start hitting the wing threes or we are toast.
That is what I think.
I call him a poor man’s Brandon Rush. Not quite as good, at least now, but the same sort of player.
Relentless
We had a couple steals in the lane, picked up a few transition points, the set up against the zone – ended the half on a run
9-0 run to end the half.
This team is good. Really good.
And to think we should only get better when Mario Little joins in on the rotation.
So this is what the #2 ranked recruiting class looks like.
I really don’t want to get my hopes up. In 2005, I was taking bets as to what round KU would lose in the NIT. Turned out to win the Big XII but lost to freaking Bradley. Stupid Marcus Sommerville.
Have you advertized this
site on LJ world? They always have a running chat on their newspaper site….
How is the Sprint Center not packed?
Now I’m going to have read all the comments from the Fizzou Muck-heads on the Star tomorrow.
Not sure
why collins tries a bounce pass with 3 ‘Cuse players in the paint – but hey…he’s still better than me. lol
And then they call a touchy-feely on the 'Cuse.
Of course, earlier in the game it was the exact opposite turn of events.
Honestly, this reffing has been pretty poor.
Yikes.
That last little run wasn’t so much fun.
We need some points really bad right now. Hopefully Sherron can make his FTs and we can settle down and stop turning the ball over.
Yeah - its a little sloppy at the moment
Just slow it down and go back to attacking to zone. We’re getting trapped in the half court.
This is good
This is getting me geeked up for KU/Mizzou on Sat. I want to ruin their season like no tomorrow.
Wow close game.
Tuned in late after The Shield series finale.
Would it kill anyone to hit a free throw? And that block was pretty borderline…hopefully Collins is alright.
Aldrich has improved a ton since last year.
Granted the tons of playing time he has been getting helps…but man he plays ALOT better.
Oh crap a steal.
Are you kidding me Dick?
The reffing has been terrible for both sides. They couldn’t make up their minds all night if they were going to call it tight or let them play.
Oh well.
It was fun for awhile, there.
We should have won in regulation.
It’s all good, this is what happens when you are this young. We win this game in another month, much less by the end of the year.
Thinking the same thing
Especially once we figure out our complete rotation. When does Little return?
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Like I said earlier
I saw KU lose against a not real good St. Joe’s team at Madison Square Garden and then lose to Nevada after losing 2 in Maui… This is a much better team than that, and they won the Big XII regular season and tourny. I’ll take this game. We’ll learn how to close these out.
Thanks for the Helluva Game
Good luck to your Jayhawks the rest of the year. Just wait til next year, Kansas will be incredible again.
