Rock Chalk Talk with 2009 Kansas Recruit Jordan Webb.

It's back, Rock Chalk Talk with one of our current 2009 football commitments.  This week I had the opportunity to chat with Union Missouri quarterback Jordan Webb.  Webb is a 6’1” pro style quarterback weighing in at just over the 200 pound mark.  He’s not afraid to run, confident in his arm and as you’ll see when he talks about his offensive statistics this season he has the ability to score and score often.

The question on Jayhawk fans minds everywhere is who will be the replacement for Todd Reesing after the 2009 season.  Not only is Jordan Webb a strong possibility but he seems to be a slightly larger clone of one Todd Reesing.  Webb comes across as a confident player in his abilities and one that is not only smart on the field but also off.

Mark Mangino and company have found another good one in Webb and expect for him to be competing for the spot in the near future after arriving at Kansas in January due to early graduation followed by a redshirt year under Reesing.

Jump into the post for the entire interview transcript…

As a side note stay tuned for future recruiting news as we are entering into the thick of the wrap-up recruiting season and I expect some movement both for the good and also possibly some for the bad between now and February.

Jordan Webb interview w/Denverjhawk 11/23/08

Denver

First off, tell us a little about your senior season, how it’s gone both individually and for your team.

Jordan

As a team we went 11-1. We lost in the first round of the playoffs which was disappointing but we had a pretty good year.

I also had a pretty good year individually. I completed 70% of my passes for over 3000 yards and 31 TD's. I also ran for over 1000 yards and 24 TD's

Denver

Wow, not bad at all...55 TD's, I think anyone could live with that.

What type of offense does your high school run? Did that factor in to your selection of Kansas? Do you think that will better prepare you for your time at Kansas?

My high school runs the spread which is definitely going to help when I get to Kansas. It also played a very big role in my commitment to Kansas

Denver

Well that’s a good transition to my next question, what was it about Kansas that made it feel right for your situation? Any specific player, coach, other recruit or event that you would point to as the clincher?

Jordan

The entire coaching staff made me very comfortable. Coach Mangino is a great person as well as coach and Coach Warriner is also a great coach and I have built a great relationship with him. I talk to a few other recruits and I'm excited about our class.  When I committed to Kansas I didn't know anyone on the team but since then I've started talking to AJ Steward and he's really cool.

Denver

Now you committed to Kansas fairly early on, with the success you’ve had your senior year, have others been knocking on your door trying to get you to go elsewhere, and how do you approach that type of pressure?

Jordan

Some schools still send me mail but I'm not worried about anyone else. I'm just excited to be a Jayhawk and that won't change.

Denver

Good to hear, now how would you describe your style of play at the Quarterback position? As a follow up is there any player out there College/Pro that you feel you model your game after?

Jordan

I think I'm very accurate and can make all the throws. I also can get yards on the ground and am a very physical runner. I also feel that I'm a very strong leader. I really never tried to model my game after anyone but everyone compares me to (Todd)Reesing and (Chase)Daniel.

Denver

That said, how has the success of Todd Reesing in the Jayhawks system impacted the way you as a quarterback look at the opportunities with Kansas football?

Jordan

It has me very excited about the possibility of putting up the same numbers on such a big stage and being able to be the leader of such a great offense.

Denver

If you had to pick a current player who are you looking most forward to playing with? Along the same lines what current recruit are you looking most forward to playing with?

Jordan

I'd have to say I'm very excited about playing under Reesing my first year. It's good knowing that I'll be learning from such a great player. Also, I'm very excited about playing with fellow recruits Kevin Young and Gavin Howard. They are both really cool guys.

Denver

Looking ahead to your days at Kansas you’re scheduled to arrive in Lawrence as an early graduate, what are your expectations in terms of your development as a player? When do you look to be competing for the starting job?

Jordan

I know I'm going to develop a lot under such a great coaching staff. The way it looks after Reesing graduates the job will be up for grabs so I hope that will be the year that I will be competing for the job.

Denver

This week marks the 117th meeting of Kansas and Missouri in the border war. You’re from Missouri, were you recruited there? And how has it been committing to Kansas early on and then wrapping up your high school career in the state that hates Kansas so much?

Jordan

I was recruited by Missouri and visited there a couple times. There are many Missouri fans in my area. It's pretty exciting to think about playing in that game in the next couple of years.

Denver

Let’s assume then for a moment that you redshirt as a freshman with Todd Reesing the apparent starter for 2009. Then let’s look ahead to the border war 2013. If you should win the starting job post Reesing that would be your senior season, what do you want people to say about you as a player, your career and Kansas as a program after your time as a Jayhawk?

Jordan

I want people to remember me as a great football player that also did very well in class, did a lot for the University of Kansas and is a great role model. Also, a Big 12 Championship would be nice to have.

Denver

I think Kansas fans everywhere would welcome the Big 12 Championship.  All right, I've got a few quick hitters for you here to wrap things up…Short and simple.

Favorite NFL Team

Jordan

St. Louis Rams

Denver

How about favorite NFL Player?

Jordan

Either Drew Brees or Ben Roethlisberger.

Denver

Which one are you more similar to, I would assume Brees.

Jordan

Yeah Brees

Denver

Other than football, what are you most looking forward to about Kansas.

Jordan

Pursuing my business degree.

Denver

If you played a position other than quarterback what would it be? why?

Jordan

I'd have to say linebacker because I love contact and that’s what I played when I was younger

Denver

A quarterback with a linebacker attitude I like it. Which Big 12 Team can you not wait to play?

Jordan

I'm definitely most excited for the Border War

Denver

All right then last question, Border War 2008, what’s your prediction and it’s ok to be biased.

Jordan

I'm going to say Kansas wins 49 42. It'll be a classic

Denver

I love it, I’ll be there so I hope you're right.

Jordan

I think it'll be a great one

Thanks Denver

Great interview. After Reesing graduates, it should be very interesting to see who wins the QB job between Kale Pick, Jordan Webb, and Christian Matthews.

Pick will have the advantage of being older and been in the system for 2 years, but it seems like Webb has a ton of potential. Matthews is a sleeper in there in that he’s an athletic, dual-threat QB. Depth is a nice problem to have.

Couldn't agree more...

there isn’t a clear heir apparent in my mind yet. I think Pick will have the advantage of experience to some extent, Webb will have been here a year and a half, also played spread in HS, and finally Matthews is clearly the most athletic. I guess it depends who takes control of the reigns and what direction Mangino and Co. decide to go.

With Jordan I do think there is something to be said for having played in that system your whole career but regardless I like the fact that while we are staying true to guys that will fit our mold…all three of these will add some much needed height under center. No trees by any means but every inch counts.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.
